I recently came across a book that I feel everyone should get their hands on. Although this book has been out since September of last year, it is still on the Amazon.com top 50 list and has been #1 across several health categories for months. That in and of its self is a strong indicator that this book works and has gained the attention of many. But first, let me give you a brief introduction into grain.
I was surprised when I first heard that both scientific and historical research showed that humans have not always consumed grain- in fact the human body is not even designed to consume 6-11 servings of grain per day (as the famous food pyramid depicts). In fact, modern day grain possesses a lot of attributes that have negative effects on our bodies. For instance, grain contains Phytic Acid, a mineral blocker that prevents absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc. Consuming grain also causes our insulin levels to spike, which can cause hormone imbalance; setting up a negative domino effect throughout our entire system. Scientific research has shown that grains can deplete nutrients, cause weight gain, and even infertility. The list goes on and on about all the negative effects of grain. So one might ask, “What about the positive aspects of grain?” Well, there may be a few positive things about grain, such as certain grains are rich in soluble fiber, but what you really should be asking is “do the positives outweigh the negatives?” The simple answer is NO.
Now that you have a (very) brief understanding as to why grains are getting the boot these days, I would encourage you to research for yourself as to why grains could have a negative effect on your health. A good start to understanding this diet is to read Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar–Your Brain’s Silent Killers which covers other parts of your body in which grain consumption has an effect, such as your brain.
Try a grain free diet for 90 days and see how you feel. I can bet that you will loose weight, have more energy, focus more, and even sleep better.
